Description

Set in the bustling streets of 1840s London, this comic sketch launches with a bewildering legal scramble over a missing invoice. The hapless debtor, Hannibal Fitzflummery Fitzflam, finds himself pursued by a pair of flamboyant solicitors, the ever‑scheming Gallowsworthy and Pickles, and a bumbling officer tasked with keeping him in custody. Their chase leads him to a country inn where a bewildered waiter spins a tangled tale of a mysterious German gentleman and a theatrical performance that promises both spectacle and scandal.

The action then bursts onto the stage, where Fitzflam, armed with a cane and half‑eaten oranges, bursts into the box seats to expose a swindle. Around him, a chorus of caricatured patrons—flirtatious damsels, red‑haired lotharios, and pretentious critics—pepper the dialogue with witty barbs and absurd observations about art, vanity, and society. Listeners are treated to the razor‑sharp satire and rapid‑fire wordplay that made early Punch a beloved mirror of Victorian absurdity.
