PUNCH’S PENCILLINGS.—NO. VII.
A brisk, tongue‑in‑cheek portrait opens the tale, introducing the Applebite family and their flamboyant heir, Agamemnon Collumpsion Applebite. Fresh from the death of his father and a generous inheritance, the young gentleman lives a comfortably idle life: a tidy terrace, a habit of tipping waiters, and a reputation for being the perfect host. Yet beneath his self‑satisfied grin, Agamemnon remains blissfully unaware that his happiness may be incomplete.
His circle of mothers and daughters quickly spot the missing piece—a wife—to balance his wealth and social charm. They convene over steaming mocha, a massive tea‑spoon, and a bedraggled Java sparrow, plotting a gentle campaign to convince the bachelor that his “felicitous destitution” needs remedy. The scene brims with Victorian satire, as the earnest machinations of well‑meaning match‑makers set the stage for a comedy of manners that promises both amusement and a glimpse into the quirks of 19th‑century society.
