In this lively two‑act comedy‑melodrama the audience is dropped into the morning room of Natterjack Hall on the day Sir Poshbury Puddock turns forty. His loyal servant, Blethers, hints at a secret that could ruin the celebration, while his daughter Verbena and her handsome suitor Lord Bleshugh exchange tender jokes about birthday gifts and handmade “housewives.” The genteel atmosphere is quickly unsettled by the arrival of Spiker, a smooth‑talking adventurer with a long‑standing grudge.

Spiker claims to hold proof of a youthful deceit: a half‑price Underground ticket Sir Poshbury obtained when he was thirteen. He threatens to expose the baronet unless he can secure Verbena’s hand in marriage, turning a familial birthday party into a tense bargaining game. As loyalties are tested and old grudges surface, the characters must decide whether honor, love, or self‑preservation will win the day.
