Description

A lively, two‑act comedy‑melodrama unfolds in the drawing‑room of Natterjack Hall, where a tangled web of flirtations and intrigues threatens to explode. Young Verbena, pressured by her father Sir Poshbury, finds herself cornered by the persistent Lord Bleshugh, who offers a bribe to win her affection. Meanwhile, the jittery servant Blethers shuffles secrets and cash, setting the stage for a clash of ambition and desperation.

The scene turns darkly comic as Verbena wrestles with a forced marriage to the brutish Mr Spiker. In a frantic, almost farcical moment she silences him with a sofa cushion, prompting a frantic cover‑up involving her father, now a magistrate. Witty repartee, exaggerated emotions, and a satirical look at Victorian manners keep the drama brisk, while the absurdity of murder by cushion adds a uniquely macabre twist. Listeners will be drawn into the rapid exchanges and the looming question: how far will the characters go to protect their pretenses?
