THE PLAINT OF THE CAPTIVE FIELD MOUSE
A mischievous spirit awakens after a night of hedgerow whispers and decides to trade his otherworldly frolic for the honest toil of a farmhand. He approaches Farmer Brown with a bold request for a place to milk cows, only to find his earnest pledge met with skeptical humor. The narrator’s playful verses turn the simple act of milking into a rousing contest of words and wills, as the pasture’s ordinary creatures begin to respond to his fairy‑tuned cajoling.
Soon the meadow transforms into a stage for trickster enchantments: cattle grow plump and sweet, milk bubbles like crystal song, and a sudden midnight frenzy sees the herd dancing under a full moon. A bemused parson arrives with a dusty book, and the night erupts into a whirl of chanting, jingling hooves, and otherworldly laughter. Listeners are invited into this lyrical, slightly chaotic countryside where the line between mortal labor and magical mischief blurs with every rustle of thistledown.
