Three royal sisters—Roussette, Brunette and Blondine—live a quiet life with their mother until a kindly old woman, really a fairy, rewards their hospitality with a promise of future blessings. The king and his companions are instantly enchanted by the sisters, and marriages quickly follow, bringing jeweled children whose hair sheds pearls and rubies and whose foreheads bear shining stars. Jealousy and a scheming old queen lead to a dark plot to silence the infants, but a compassionate maid spares them, setting the children adrift in a cradle that drifts to sea.
Rescued by a reformed corsair and his childless wife, the four youngsters grow under their care, their golden necklaces and sparkling locks hinting at a mysterious destiny. As they mature, Belle‑Étoile learns of a missing star on her brother‑like companion Cheri and convinces the trio of princes to seek the truth of their origins. Their quest launches aboard a beautiful vessel, guided by a water‑borne siren that urges them onward toward a hidden, wondrous city.

A bold and inventive voice of 17th-century French literature, she helped shape the literary fairy tale into a genre of its own. Her stories blend courtly wit, enchantment, danger, and a delight in the unexpected.
