Description

Set in the 1765 countryside of Pitkäjärvi, the play opens on Natukka’s farmyard where a tangled web of courtship and ambition begins to unfold. Young Regina, a pretty but restless farm girl, meets the scheming Martti, a restless heir determined to win her hand before his own marriage prospects solidify. Their banter reveals a world of rival families, land disputes, and the ever‑present pressure of the church’s calendar.

Through witty dialogue and lively rural scenery, the comedy explores how love, duty, and the desire for property intersect in this tight‑knit community. Characters such as the proud Juha, the ever‑watchful suitor Antti, and the nosy neighbours add layers of humor and tension, while the looming wedding season promises both gossip and opportunity. Listeners are drawn into a vivid portrait of 18th‑century Finnish village life, where every whispered promise may turn into a public affair.
