Description

A cramped debtors’ prison looms over a modest family whose daily life teeters between hope and hardship. In the bleak cells of Marshalsea, the gentle Amy—lovingly called “Little Dorrit”—endures the weight of her father William’s endless debts while her older sister Fanny and brother Edward cling to their own fragile aspirations. Around them swirl a cast of officials, servants and strangers, each carrying their own secrets, from the stern marshalsea guard Bob to the enigmatic banker Merdle, whose fortunes cast long shadows over the inmates.

Beyond the prison walls, the Dorrits navigate a world of cramped apartments, bustling markets and the lingering scent of promises unkept. Amy’s quiet resilience begins to touch those she meets, offering a steady warmth that hints at a brighter future despite the oppressive surroundings. As the first act closes, listeners are invited to witness the delicate balance of compassion and ambition that shapes this unforgettable portrait of Victorian life.
