“PIGS IS PIGS”
By Ellis Parker Butler
In a cramped Westcote express office, the calm routine of shipping parcels erupts into a heated debate. Mike Flannery, the company’s no‑nonsense agent, insists that the rate chart treats all “pigs” alike, while irate customer Mr. Morehouse argues that his tiny guinea‑pigs are merely pets and should be charged at a lower fee. The argument spirals over the exact wording of the tariff, with Flannery pointing to a clause that forces him to apply the higher price for any animal the rule might deem a pig.
As tempers flare, Morehouse storms out, vowing to involve higher authorities, while his anxious son watches the chaos unfold at home. Back at the office, Flannery remains unfazed, confident that the rules are on his side. The stage is set for a series of comic misunderstandings and bureaucratic wrangling that will test both men’s patience and the literal interpretation of a simple shipping schedule.

Best remembered for the wonderfully absurd "Pigs Is Pigs," this prolific American humorist turned everyday mix-ups and small-town life into lively, sharply observed comedy. His work ranges from short stories and essays to novels, with a playful style that still feels fresh.
