Description

A lanky, gentle‑minded paper‑hanger named Philo Gubb fancies himself a detective after graduating from a correspondence school of sleuthing. He lives in a cramped boarding room and spends his spare moments studying the “hard‑boiled” techniques of crime‑fighting, though his approach is more comic than cunning. When a new roommate, the rotund Mr. Critz, arrives, Gubb’s curiosity is instantly aroused by a peculiar assortment of objects left on a washstand—a handful of walnut shells, a cut‑up rubber shoe heel, a tiny rubber ball, a modest book, and a gleaming gold brick.

Gubb’s attempts at covert observation end with a graceless tumble through the doorway, prompting a sharp rebuke from Critz that quickly turns into a begrudging, if bemused, conversation about detective work. The odd items hint at a puzzling scheme, and Gubb’s earnest resolve to untangle the mystery sets the stage for a series of amusing investigations. Listeners will enjoy his earnest blunders, the quirky dialogue, and the gentle satire of a man who takes his self‑appointed profession far more seriously than anyone else does.
