In a modest autumn evening, a creaking kitchen becomes the stage for an unexpected reunion. The warm glow of the hearth contrasts with the nervous chatter of Selma, an American widow, as she tends to a steaming pot and hums a familiar tune. When the infamous thief Perttunen slips through the door, his larger‑than‑life reputation fills the room with a mix of curiosity and unease.
The dialogue quickly turns playful and tense, as Selma teases the outlaw while offering him a cup of coffee and a strange, gift‑wrapped clock. Around them, a cast of locals—Aukusta, a wandering hostess, and a handful of watchful guards—pop in and out, each adding their own rumors and warnings about the daring brigand. As the night deepens, listeners are drawn into a rustic tableau where humor, danger, and the promise of a chase mingle, setting the scene for a lively tale of folk legend and lingering suspense.

A Finnish schoolteacher turned playwright, he wrote lively comedies and farces that found humor in everyday social ambitions and misunderstandings. His surviving plays suggest a sharp eye for village life and the small deceptions people tell themselves and each other.
