Description

In a quiet autumn neighborhood, a group of boys turn the sidewalks into a battlefield, wielding wooden sabres and conjuring imaginary steeds. Their game, called “bonded prisoner,” pits pairs against each other in mock duels where a touch makes the loser a captive until rescued by a teammate. The rules are fluid, the stakes are high for nine‑year‑old strategists, and the skirmishes spill from alleys into stables, yards, and even into homes, turning everyday spaces into epic war zones.

At the center of the chaos are Penrod Schofield and Sam Williams, two inventive rivals who constantly outwit each other with clever, often absurd, interpretations of the game’s law. When the youngest and smallest fighter, Verman, is captured, Sam invents a new rule about hats counting as the player himself, and the boys march their “prisoner” through secret hideouts, laughing at the absurdity of their own codes. Their antics capture the boundless imagination of childhood, where friendship, competition, and the sheer joy of make‑believe collide.
