DEEP WATERS
By W.W. JACOBS
PAYING OFF
A weary night‑watchman curses his own good nature, remembering a lifetime spent lending a hand to sailors, wives, and strangers who never seemed to thank him. On the cramped wharf he watches the petty schemes of a reckless captain and his crew, who trade shoddy trinkets for a few coins, and he repeatedly offers blunt advice that only earns scorn. His routine of sweeping the decks and listening to the clink of cheap ale is interrupted when a nervous sailor named George Tebb asks for a private favor, hinting at a recent inheritance that’s already slipping through his fingers.
The watchman's cynicism clashes with a lingering sense of duty, as he wrestles with whether to intervene in Tebb’s desperate attempts to keep his money safe. The dialogue crackles with salty dialect and the gritty atmosphere of a bustling dock, setting the stage for a tense exchange that may force the watchman to confront his own stubborn pride.

Best known for the chilling classic "The Monkey’s Paw," this English storyteller had a gift for mixing everyday life with suspense, humor, and a strong sense of place. Much of his work grew out of the dockside world he knew as a boy along the Thames.
