PAULINA
Paulina Evering is a bright, generous girl whose kindness extends to every living creature. While other children lose interest in pets once they become injured or less attractive, Paulina cares for animals in need, offering them patience, comfort, and a safe place in her little hospital. Her unusual household includes a wounded dog, a one-eyed cat, a blind squirrel, injured birds, a rabbit rescued from cruel boys, and a graceful young deer.
When Paulina discovers that her cousins are about to abandon their badly scalded dog, Fido, she immediately steps in to protect him from further suffering. Her compassion is not limited to animals she owns: she shares her garden’s grapes with neighborhood children, tends her fowls and ducks, and finds joy in providing for creatures others overlook. This gentle story follows a memorable young heroine whose daily encounters reveal the rewards of mercy, responsibility, and thoughtful care. The arrival of two young lambs promises another test of her generous spirit.
