In a moon‑lit garden behind a stately Finnish manor, a mischievous troubadour darts between the hedges while a young servant—known only as the lakeija—chants a love‑filled song beneath a window. A stern steward bursts onto the scene, demanding order, as the two characters trade barbs, threats, and exaggerated vows that feel as much like a folk‑play as a courtroom drama. The dialogue crackles with rhythmic insults, half‑sung verses, and a sudden, absurd demand for a mysterious figure called “Pater Paulus” to intervene.
What unfolds is a comic tug‑of‑war over a proposed marriage between the steward’s daughter and the earnest lakeija, whose affection is both sincere and riddled with petty jealousies. Money, honor, and the promise of a hundred gold coins become bargaining chips, while the steward teeters between protectiveness and curiosity about the outsider’s motives. Listeners are treated to a vivid portrait of class tensions, witty wordplay, and a bubbling anticipation that the night’s chaotic performance may yet tip the balance toward an unexpected union.
