Description

A quiet New England riverbank becomes the starting point for a heartfelt tale of love, duty and danger. David Matson, a ship‑carpenter turned sailor, prepares to leave his wife Anna and their two barefoot boys for a voyage to Spain, sharing one last tender kiss before the wherry pulls away. The scene captures the ordinary rhythms of family life while hinting at the looming uncertainty of the sea.

When the Lively Turtle disappears, Anna is left a widowed mother, her grief echoing through the seasons. Meanwhile, David finds himself a captive in the bustling ports of North Africa, forced into hard labor under the watchful eye of a kind foreman. As years stretch into decades, his memories of the Merrimack and his family grow both sharper and more distant, fueling a quiet hope that may yet bridge the gulf between two worlds.

The opening pages blend domestic warmth with adventurous peril, inviting listeners to follow a young husband’s struggle to survive far from home and to wonder whether love can endure across oceans and time.
