In a cramped yet respectable Parisian house, a modest civil servant clings to the fading prestige of his noble lineage. Hector de Gribelin, barely earning enough to keep his wife Henrietta and their two small children fed, spends his evenings dreaming of the world beyond the narrow streets of Faubourg Saint‑Germain. Their life is a careful balance of frugality and occasional indulgences—Sunday walks along the Champs‑Élysées and the rare free theatre ticket keep the household from sinking completely into despair.

When a sudden bonus of three hundred francs arrives, Hector sees an opportunity to restore a slice of dignity. He plans a lavish country outing, complete with a hired carriage and a borrowed saddle horse, hoping the spectacle will impress both his children and his superiors. The family buzzes with anticipation, rehearsing imagined gallops and polishing the image they wish to project. Yet the excitement also stirs hidden anxieties about keeping up appearances in a world that values rank above all else.
