Description

The adventure begins aboard the modern steamer Columbia, departing New York in late June with a lively, eclectic group of travelers. Amid jokes, dances and even a playful Fourth‑of‑July pageant, the author and companion W. A. Ross sail past icy waters, porpoises and the rugged coastline of northern Ireland. A brief stop at Moville and a night‑long customs check lead them into the bright summer of Londonderry, where the journey truly starts.

From there the narrative follows a jaunting‑car ride through Donegal, Connemara and beyond, pausing at ancient abbeys, crumbling castles and bustling market towns. The book is sprinkled with photographs of landmarks such as Rathmullen Abbey, the Seven‑Arches bridge and the dramatic cliffs of Achill. It weaves together vivid descriptions, historical snippets from sources like the Four Masters, and lively observations of local customs, offering listeners a rich, portable tour of Ireland’s western heartland.
