AAPO PÄRNÄNEN
In a modest torppa on the Finnish countryside, Kiviahon, an ageing tenant farmer, shuffles through the daily chores while his sharp‑tongued daughter Liisa keeps the household lively with jokes and teasing. Their small world is already buzzing with visitors: the ever‑present maid Leena, the meddling neighbour Hakala, and a handful of assorted characters who pop in and out of the kitchen, each adding their own slice of humour to the otherwise simple setting.
When a rumor surfaces that the ambitious young Juhosaarimäki may take over Kiviahon’s land, the farmer’s nerves flare. The lease that has bound him to the farm for eighty‑five years is suddenly called into question, and whispers of an unexpected marriage stir his imagination. As old grievances with the late wife linger and the community’s gossip swirls, Kiviahon finds himself confronting both the practical worries of losing his home and the absurdity of his own tangled thoughts—all delivered with a light, comic touch that captures the rhythm of rural life.

A Finnish schoolteacher-turned-writer, he is remembered both for his books and for writing the words to the Christmas song "Köyhän lapsen joulukuusi." His work grew out of everyday life, education, and a close connection to ordinary readers.
