ODD CHARGES
In a dimly lit tavern called the Cauliflower, a weary traveller settles into a warm corner, sharing a mug and a pipe with an elderly regular. Their casual banter quickly turns uncanny when the stranger produces a frothy ale and a fresh pipe out of thin air, revealing a talent for conjuring that both amuses and unsettles the locals. The old man, intrigued by the performer’s odd abilities, recalls a similar marvel that once visited the village, hinting at a mysterious lineage of tricksters.
As the night wears on, the conjurer’s demonstrations grow bolder—fishing live frogs, mice, and even a snake from patrons’ pockets, provoking gasps, laughter, and a flurry of nervous energy. The tavern’s patrons, half‑amused and half‑bewildered, are drawn into a spectacle that promises more marvels later that evening. Listeners are invited to step into the smoky room and watch the ordinary transform into the extraordinary, all while the humble tap‑room hums with anticipation.

Best known for the chilling classic "The Monkey’s Paw," this English storyteller had a gift for mixing everyday life with suspense, humor, and a strong sense of place. Much of his work grew out of the dockside world he knew as a boy along the Thames.
