A summer night in Helsinki finds four middle‑aged men gathered in a quiet Japanese‑styled room on Alppila. There’s Dr. Juho Varjakka, a respected physician‑scientist; Taneli Koskenkorva, a bank director whose dreams of painting are forever postponed by duty; Jakke Pulliainen, a newspaper reporter known for his hard‑living ways; and Väinö Teikari, a university lecturer who returns from Paris with a habit of sipping strong spirits. Their professions and personalities differ sharply, yet they share a patient, contemplative mood that blossoms when the city’s bustle fades and the evening air drifts in through an open window.
In the soft glow of lamplight they trade wry observations about ambition, money, and the possibility of a more meaningful life. The banker laments his lack of artistic calling, the reporter teases the others about their financial worries, the doctor confesses a yearning to walk the holy lands, and the academic ponders whether true wealth lies in ideas or riches. Their conversation, peppered with humor and a hint of melancholy, opens a window onto the restless hearts of men who, despite their achievements, still search for purpose and a glimpse of something larger than themselves.
