Description

A bleak November afternoon hangs over Number Three, Winifred Place, where Mrs. Burrell runs a snug wool‑and‑knick‑knack shop that doubles as a modest lodging house. Tall, stern‑faced and forever on the lookout for fault, she keeps a tight‑fisted watch over her daughter Hope, orphaned niece Berda, and over‑worked maid Hannah. The street outside is slick with slush, the sky a dense grey, and the shop’s quiet interiors feel more like a sanctuary than a business in a city that seems to have paused for winter.

When a sharp knock at the side‑door signals an unexpected visitor, the household’s routine is shattered. A young woman is thrust into the arms of a stranger, and Mrs. Burrell immediately worries about who will replace Berda’s labor. The tension between the characters—Mrs. Burrell’s exacting expectations, Hope’s languid indifference, and Hannah’s weary diligence—begins to surface, promising a series of small crises and hidden connections that will test the fragile balance of this cramped, fog‑filled corner of London.
