BÉNÉDICT H. RÉVOIL - NOUVEAUX CONTES EXTRAORDINAIRES
(SCÈNES DE MOEURS MEXICAINES)
TYPES ET MOEURS DE LA RÉPUBLIQUE ARGENTINE
A weary traveller finds himself far up the Mississippi, where an unexpected freeze turns the mighty river into a glittering maze of ice. With his seasoned Canadian batelier as guide, he is led to a modest riverside settlement, where they pile timber around the boat and warm themselves in a cramped cabin that barely keeps the cold at bay.
Life settles into a rhythm of whittling, hunting, and fishing; swans stand guard on the glassy surface while coyotes circle, and the crack of a gun echoes through the snow‑covered woods. The duo fashions meals from fresh fish, game, and a surprising haul of flour and bread brought in from a distant baker, sharing stories over a fire that burns any kind of wood.
One dawn the river awakens with a deafening roar as the ice begins to break, water surging and shattering the quiet stillness. The sudden thaw forces the men into frantic action, confronting the raw power of the river before the outcome can be known.
