Description

A young cleric named Tord Bonde arrives at a remote monastery, notebook in hand, intent on recording the world around him. As monks discuss the shifting fortunes of the Scandinavian crowns, he senses the tension between a restless Norway and a Sweden eager to reclaim its influence. The conversations hint at the looming conflict over the throne of a kingdom that has just welcomed a new ruler from Finland, setting the stage for a clash of ambition and faith.

The narrative weaves together Tord’s observations with the fates of King Charles VIII, his rival Christian I, and the powerful archbishop Jöns Pentinpoika Oxenstjern. Early chapters follow Tord’s uneasy capture, his uneasy alliance with a traveling envoy, and the whispered plans of noble families vying for power. Through crisp historical detail and personal intrigue, the story paints a vivid picture of a turbulent era where loyalty, prophecy, and deception shape the destiny of a nation.
