Description

This volume follows the second surveying expedition of the Beagle from its preparations in England through the long voyage toward the southern coasts of South America. Detailed nautical observations sit alongside lively accounts of shipboard life: fitting out the vessel, testing instruments and chronometers, studying tides and currents, and facing squalls, quarantine, illness, and the hazards of unfamiliar waters.

The journey passes through Madeira, the Cape Verde Islands, Brazil, the River Plate, Patagonia, and Tierra del Fuego, combining chart-making with close descriptions of landscapes, weather, wildlife, and coastal settlements. Particular attention is given to the Indigenous peoples of southern South America, including their clothing, food, language, beliefs, trade, travel, and relations with European visitors. The narrative reflects the assumptions of its nineteenth-century observers, but also preserves valuable firsthand detail about regions and communities encountered during an era of exploration. For listeners interested in maritime history, natural history, anthropology, and life aboard a surveying vessel, it offers an expansive record of travel, observation, and uncertainty.
