Set in a tidy, modest farmhouse of western Finland half a century earlier, the opening scene invites listeners into a sun‑dappled drawing‑room where simple yet well‑kept furnishings hint at a world caught between tradition and quiet aspiration. The space feels lived‑in, its white‑washed windows, hand‑woven rugs and modest décor echoing a community whose daily rhythms are guided by both faith and practical labor.
At the heart of the drama are Heleena, a dignified matriarch, her gentle servant Tati, the earnest pastor Martti, the shy adolescent Liisu and the poised household head Miili. Their interactions soon spill into a mixture of hymn‑like chanting, tender admonitions and a lingering sense of unease, as the pastor’s devout teachings begin to shape the children’s understanding of obedience and salvation. The mood balances warmth with an undercurrent of tension, promising an intimate portrait of rural life where belief and personal desire subtly clash.
