In the opening chapters, Britling wrestles with a powerful, almost heroic urge to leave the quiet comforts of his country house and answer the nation’s call to arms. He imagines himself in uniform, a volunteer thrust into the thick of battle, while also picturing a more mundane role behind a desk, his mind oscillating between the romance of combat and the practicalities of service. The swirl of newspaper reports and battlefield updates feeds his resolve, turning vague patriotism into a concrete desire to contribute to the war effort.
At the same time, Britling grapples with a quieter, more personal anxiety: the impact his decision will have on his family, especially his teenage sons. He worries that his youngest might feel abandoned or that his older son could be drawn into a conflict before he is ready. These inner conflicts paint a portrait of a man caught between duty to country and responsibility to those he loves, setting the stage for his journey through the tumult of war.

A pioneer of modern science fiction, this English writer imagined time travel, alien invasion, and invisible men with a mix of adventure and sharp social insight. His stories still feel lively because they pair big ideas with very human fears and hopes.
