Description

Aboard a P & O steamer cutting through the bright waters of the Bay of Bengal, a motley group of English travelers endure the first, uneasy days of a long homeward journey. The deck is a tableau of stiff upper‑class manners: silent ladies in white piqué and drill, men polishing cigars, and a handful of restless souls yearning for conversation. As the ship drifts toward Aden, the atmosphere crackles with the promise of friendships that might blossom once the initial frost of solitude thaws.

Among the passengers, an elegant middle‑aged couple draws quiet admiration, their easy affection a rare sight among the more reserved travelers. A mother clutching her sickly daughters, a chatty old lady eager to befriend a shy young girl, and a “Impossible Person” whose secrets will soon spill, all add layers of intrigue to the cramped deck. Listeners are invited to step into this world of polite restraint, anticipation, and the subtle humor that makes a sea voyage a stage for unexpected connections.
