In early February a section of the south‑west battlement at the Abbey of St. Alban’s collapsed, sending massive stones crashing onto the roof and startling nearby residents with a thunder‑like roar. The damage is extensive, with lead and timber felled into the nave, and estimates suggest about £15,000 will be needed to arrest further decay. A public subscription has been opened, reflecting the public’s strong attachment to this ancient monument.
The abbey’s story stretches back to Roman Verulam, a thriving city that was destroyed and rebuilt after Boudicca’s revolt, later becoming the burial site of England’s first Christian martyr, St. Alban. Over centuries the structure evolved, mixing Norman pointed arches with older Roman‑derived round arches, creating a striking, if uneven, interior that still impresses visitors with its sheer scale. Today the surviving conventual church, gatehouse and scattered walls stand as a tangible link to the nation’s early history, inviting listeners to explore the layers of faith, power and artistry woven into its stones.
