Monkeying with ancestors
On a darkening night at a lonely desert depot, two drifters wait for a train while bemoaning the emptiness of their town and the crookedness of their old poker partners. Their conversation is interrupted by a frantic passenger who bursts from a baggage car, shouting about being wronged and demanding compensation. A massive monkey—larger than a man—leaps from the car, sparking a chaotic clash that ends with the creature’s owner, a scarred Italian named Pedro, stumbling away into the mesquite.
The three witnesses—one of the drifters, his companion Chuck, and the bewildered monkey—stand silent as the train departs, the animal’s odd behavior hinting at something beyond a mere circus act. Chuck’s cynical humor and Pedro’s broken English weave a tense, comic tableau that suggests hidden debts, long‑forgotten family legends, and a strange bond between man and beast. Listeners are drawn into a gritty, restless world where the ordinary and the uncanny collide at the edge of a dusty track.
