Mnais is a once‑alive sikulerin, now bound in marble and haunted by a shattered krug that once held her family's hope. As a shepherd girl she tends a flock in a valley of ferns, but a sudden accident with the vessel draws the wrath of unseen forces and the ire of a local witch, Rhus. Fleeing the angry spirits, she is forced to leave her familiar hills and confront a world of ancient trees, stone obelisks, and restless nymphs.
Guided by cryptic whispers, Mnais follows the promise of a mysterious artist named Timander, whose villa lies hidden among glowing laurel walls. Along the way she encounters dryads and strange creatures that test her resolve, while the broken krug continues to echo a curse she must lift. The first act sets her on a perilous quest to reclaim what was lost and to discover whether the god she seeks can truly free her.

Best known for sharp, politically charged novels, he used satire to expose hypocrisy, authoritarianism, and the social habits of imperial Germany. His work stayed fiercely engaged with public life, and his opposition to Nazism pushed him into exile in the 1930s.
