Description

A small carriage rattles up a mist‑shrouded ridge in early‑morning Normandy, carrying four women and three men whose sleep‑laden eyes barely catch the dawning light. The landscape unfolds in golden wheat and steaming fields, while a startled rabbit darts across the road, prompting the amused Count to point it out with a flourish. As the travelers stir, a lively exchange begins, with the witty painter Léon Chenal and the dream‑like paroonitar de Sérenne teasing each other and coaxing stories from the group.

Through their banter, the listeners glimpse a tapestry of personalities: the sarcastic René Lemanoir, the impatient driver, and the melancholy Count, each hinting at hidden romances, rivalries and past misadventures. Maupassant’s keen eye captures the ordinary moments of a carriage ride, turning them into a vivid portrait of human folly and fleeting pleasure. The tale invites you to settle into the rhythm of the road and listen to the whispered confidences that might just echo beyond the countryside.

About the author

Guy de Maupassant

Guy de Maupassant

1850–1893

Best known as one of the great masters of the short story, he captured ordinary lives with sharp realism, dark humor, and an eye for how quickly hope can turn into disappointment. His fiction ranges from social satire to psychological unease, which helps explain why stories like "Boule de Suif" and "The Horla" still feel vivid today.
