HENKILÖT:
A cold winter night settles over a modest log cabin where Nevalainen, a seasoned woodsman, returns from the forest with his wife Elina and their curious daughter Marjatta. The hearth crackles, Tuura the hired hand carves wood, and playful banter about wolves, bears and lingering forest spirits fills the room. The family’s simple routine is gently interrupted by rumors of mysterious creatures roaming the nearby woods.
The dialogue weaves together everyday concerns—fuel, food, and the fear of the unknown—with hints of old superstitions that still haunt the household. Marjatta’s imagination runs wild, while Elina tries to keep her children calm amid whispered warnings of unseen hunters and restless spirits. Tuura’s flirtatious teasing adds a layer of tension, exposing the fragile balance between the safety of home and the wild beyond.
In this first act, the play captures the quiet resilience of a rural family confronting nature’s mysteries, offering listeners a vivid portrait of Finnish forest life at the turn of the twentieth century. The gentle humor and lingering dread create an atmosphere that feels both intimate and timeless, inviting you to linger by the fire and listen to the forest’s quiet song.
