In a quiet summer of 1917 a modest Finnish farmhouse rises from the rye‑filled lanes, its weathered walls and smoke‑crowned sauna painting a picture of timeless countryside life. On its porch stands the four‑year‑old Nyke, already called “Mestari Nyke,” his small frame puffed up with the confidence of a self‑appointed master, while his shaggy terrier Sissu circles loyally at his heels. The surrounding fields, the creaking hay‑rick and the gentle hum of daily chores set a warm, almost nostalgic backdrop for the boy’s world.
That tranquil scene is interrupted by the arrival of Havukan Taavetti, an elderly virsukimppu carrying a heavy bundle of hymn books, whose purpose is to visit the household and dispense his usual counsel. Nyke, however, is preoccupied with a recent misadventure—his freshly earned “man's trousers” have been soaked and hang drying on the porch, a source of both pride and humiliation for the young master. The damp fabric sparks an unexpected clash of wills, as Taavetti’s curiosity and Nyke’s stubborn pride collide, promising a day that will test the boy’s resolve and the village’s unspoken codes.
