Men of Their Race
In a quiet farming community, Jessie Dealey spends her days caring for a bedridden old woman whose sharp eyes and sharper tongue seem to notice more than they should. When Dick Walsh, a weathered stranger and long-absent member of a notorious local family, returns home, his arrival stirs old judgments, uneasy memories, and questions about the men who bear the Walsh name.
Jessie is already caught between duty and desire. She has promised herself to resist Robert Walsh, handsome, persuasive, and dangerously difficult to forget, yet the cool autumn night draws her toward a secret meeting in the orchard. As gossip, family reputation, and private longing converge, she must reckon with the difference between inherited character and personal choice. This atmospheric story explores desire, suspicion, and the narrow boundaries imposed on women and men in a closely watched rural world.
