Description

Shag Moran grips the controls of a massive De Haviland bomber, soaring above the endless mesquite of south‑Texas. The barren landscape below, a sea of gray‑green waves, reminds him why he’s finally reached the coveted Border Air Patrol—a dream he fought for from a poverty‑stricken childhood. As the aircraft dips toward the distant town of McMullen, the thrill of being alone in the sky feels like pure freedom.

Though he barely earned his wings and has only a few hundred hours logged, Moran’s determination masks his inexperience. He’s been thrust into a unit tasked with curbing a massive smuggling operation that has plagued the Rio Grande, a mission whispered about in every hangar. The pressure to prove himself is fierce, but his love of flight drives him to bluff confidence and hide his doubts.

Now, with the throttle throttled back and the tachometer humming at nine hundred RPM, Moran steadies his descent toward the makeshift airstrip. The wind whistles through the wires, and the ground rushes up, revealing a cluster of hangars and a bustling town below. In that moment, the rookie pilot knows the real test is just beginning, and the thin line between daring and danger hangs in the balance.
