Description

On a bleak January morning, twelve‑year‑old Tim leaves his modest cabin with his mother, trekking five miles through icy Lexington County to The Vale, a prestigious breeding farm. There he meets Colonel Darnton, the stern overseer who intends to turn the boy into a jockey, and the stoic Mrs. Doolin, who reminds him of the family’s proud, hard‑working reputation. The cold wind and the weight of his mother’s parting words set the tone for a harsh new world where every sunrise begins before dawn and every night ends in exhaustion.

Life in the stables proves unforgiving. Tim learns quickly that a stable‑boy must be sharp, obedient, and resilient, especially when a misstep with the prized stallion King Faraway lands both horse and boy in danger. Through bruises, sleepless nights nursing a sick yearling, and relentless chores, he discovers a deep bond with the animals and a growing sense of responsibility that shapes his coming‑of‑age in the shadow of the Southern countryside.
