On a jagged outcrop overlooking a smoked‑filled harbour, a scarred white man lies half‑clad in leaves, rifle at hand, watching a British gunboat and a landing party scour the ashes of his former village. Beneath the ruined stone wall of his house a heavy barrel of silver dollars remains buried, the only thing that keeps him from surrendering to the fury of the natives who have set fire to everything he once knew. His only companion is a wounded island woman, whose anger at his greed mirrors his own desperate need for revenge.
Cast out from a Hobart whaler for mutiny, the outlaw has abandoned all ties to civilization and become a feared leader among the island tribes. Within a year he has secured a hut, a wife, and a reputation that draws both respect and envy. Now, with a single cartridge left, he plots a daring strike against passing ships, a gamble that could either restore his lost fortune or seal his fate.

Drawn from real experience in the Pacific, these stories carry the feel of salt air, danger, and far-off islands. His life as a trader and wanderer gave his fiction an unusual immediacy that still sets it apart.
