Description

A restless boy named Ulysses grows up in the shadow of an ancient church near Valencia, where his father, a modest notary, fills his mind with tales of knights, crusades and the romance of a bygone age. The quiet ritual of mass, the dust‑laden light through cracked windows, and the distant roar of steamships in the harbor ignite in him a yearning for something larger than the narrow streets he knows. Surrounded by the faded grandeur of stone arches and the solemn faces of a select few parishioners, he begins to imagine a life that stretches beyond the familiar walls of his town.

As Ulysses reaches adolescence, his curiosity turns toward the sea that glimmers beyond the harbor, a place where legends of heroes and distant lands seem within reach. The novel follows his early steps toward that unknown world, tracing the pull between duty to family and the irresistible call of adventure. With vivid descriptions of Mediterranean life and a narrator attuned to both history and youthful longing, the story opens a window onto a formative journey that promises both danger and discovery.
