Description

In the shadowed halls of an ancient Alpine castle, a tormented noble named Manfredo wrestles with sleepless thoughts that gnaw at his soul. His monologue reveals a mind exhausted by endless study, triumph, and the hollow victories of power, leaving him yearning for something beyond ordinary human experience. Desperate to break his isolation, he summons elemental spirits—air, rock, sea, and fire—hoping their supernatural aid will answer his restless yearning.

The drama unfolds as each spirit responds, offering a glimpse of the vast, indifferent forces that shape the world, while Manfredo’s pride and despair clash in a tense, lyrical exchange. Set against the stark beauty of the Alps and the echoing emptiness of the night, the first act balances philosophical introspection with a haunting, magical atmosphere. Listeners are drawn into a struggle between intellectual hubris and the primal mystery that lies just beyond mortal reach.

About the author

Baron George Gordon Byron Byron

Baron George Gordon Byron Byron

1788–1824

A dazzling, rebellious voice of the Romantic age, this poet turned travel, scandal, love, and political passion into some of the most memorable verse in English. His work can be witty, melancholy, dramatic, and surprisingly modern all at once.
