Description

In the sun‑lit clearing of a modest hill beside a sparkling forest lake, a bustling farmstead hums with the rhythm of daily chores. Liisu, the eldest daughter of the well‑off Mäkelä family, moves between the airy rooms of the torppa and the fields, spreading fresh linen and spinning yarn for a dress she will soon wear herself. Her gentle nature and bright eyes have won the affection of everyone around her, and a quiet engagement to the young patrician Jaakko adds a hopeful promise to her otherwise industrious life.

One afternoon a familiar voice breaks the tranquil routine as Jussila, an itinerant landlord returning from the city, arrives with his horse and a boisterous crew. The unexpected visit brings a swirl of conversation, coffee, and the smoky scent of tobacco, while Liisu strives to keep her household running smoothly. As neighbors gather and stories are exchanged, the farm’s simple harmony faces the first hints of change, setting the stage for the young woman’s choices to shape her future.
