The story opens in a Finnish village at the turn of 1919, where the fragile calm of early spring is pierced by an uneasy tension. Juho, the manor’s long‑standing host, trudges through his fields burdened by both the weight of the earth and a growing sense of dread. Around him, the farmhands and day‑laborers gather in uneasy clusters, their conversations growing louder and more hostile as rumors of unrest spread. Even the everyday chores—post‑evenings, newspaper reading, and quiet moments in the house—are tinged with suspicion and the echo of distant slogans.
As whispers of a secret militia and radical pamphlets reach the fields, the community finds itself caught between old loyalties and the promise of change. Neighboring landowners exchange strained greetings, hinting at alliances that may be fraying. The looming possibility of a broader rebellion hangs over the countryside, leaving Juho and his neighbors to wonder whether they can keep their way of life intact or if the coming storm will irrevocably reshape their world.
