In a quiet corner of a Finnish lake district, the boy Tapani learns the ways of fishing and hunting from his hard‑working father. The rhythm of water and forest awakens in him a deep reverence for nature that soon blends with the stories and songs his father shares by the hearth. When a wandering monk from a nearby monastery whispers of a holy brotherhood under siege, Tapani’s curiosity turns into a longing to belong.
He follows the monk, Olavi, into the monastery’s stone walls and is received as a novice, given a simple rope of prayer and a glimpse of Latin verses. The daily grind of chores, stern teachings, and the cramped camaraderie of the aging brothers reveals a world far harsher than the open lakeside, yet it also kindles his spiritual hunger. As tensions rise between the faithful and the king’s new reformist edicts, the young novice senses that his choice will demand both courage and sacrifice.
