Set in a lively Finnish village at the turn of the twentieth century, this four‑act comedy follows the everyday entanglements of timber‑cutters, their families, and a wandering group of Roma. The central hub is the modest home of Jutikka, whose idle musings and endless coughing set a humorous tone for the opening scene. Around him gather his wife Lotta, the shy bride‑to‑be Pirkka, the gruff foreman Jukka, and a colourful cast of neighbors, each arguing about love, debts, and the promise of spring.
Through witty banter and folk‑song references, the play sketches the clash between tradition and ambition as characters plot marriages, negotiate lingering debts, and speculate on the arrival of the enigmatic Antti Vänni. The dialogue crackles with rural idioms and the occasional absurdity—a coughing patriarch, a needle‑threaded sigh—painting a vivid portrait of communal life. Listeners are invited to share the characters’ hopes and humor while the stage remains poised for the ensuing misunderstandings and unexpected alliances.
