Description

In the frozen wilderness beyond the Rockies, three strangers huddle around a crackling fire in a crude log‑hut. Lucius Davoren, a determined surgeon without a practice, sees the harsh landscape as a laboratory for his restless curiosity, hoping the remote trail might one day guide English emigrants northward to the polar sea. Beside him sits Geoffrey Hossack, a former Balliol student whose athletic vigor and fickle spirit provide a flicker of optimism amid the endless pine and ice. The third companion, Absalom Schanck, a rotund Hamburg native, survives on meagre rations while his plaintive humor masks the strain of constant scarcity.

The trio’s motives clash as they confront the relentless cold, the silence that swallows even a whisper, and the ever‑present threat of starvation. Their conversations reveal a mixture of youthful ambition, scholarly obsession, and weary endurance, setting the stage for both camaraderie and conflict. As the fire sputters and the night deepens, each man must decide whether the unforgiving frontier will shape his destiny—or consume it.
