Description

Inspector Baxter of Scotland Yard is a man of iron will and a short temper, and a morning without his indispensable secretary drives him to a near frenzy. When a poorly phrased note from the absent Marholm arrives, Baxter's rage bubbles over, setting the stage for a day of bureaucratic battle. As he wrestles with mounting paperwork, the arrival of an invitation to become second chairman of a lofty “Society for the Promotion of Good Morals” promises both intrigue and opportunity.

Despite his reputation for sharp judgment, Baxter finds himself flummoxed by the very act of drafting a proper reply, his pen producing a tangle of illegible scrawl that only he can decipher. The absurdity of his struggle amplifies the comic tension, while the promise of a generous annual stipend and a connection to the Duke of Norfolk hints at darker currents beneath the society's respectable façade. Listeners are drawn into a world where Victorian decorum clashes with petty office politics, setting the scene for a mystery that could expose more than just bureaucratic blunders.
