A small, shaggy black‑and‑white pup named Ready lives to please his master, Dick, following every gentle command with wagging tail and bright eyes. When Dick breaks his arm after a fall from an apple tree, the boy’s need for his companion grows, and Ready stays close, sharing the quiet nights of recovery. Restless one evening, the curious dog slips out a window, drawn by the promise of a little adventure beyond the familiar walls.
Outside, Ready meets the imposing Big Yellow Dog, whose friendly invitation sends the little canine racing farther than ever before. The excitement soon turns to confusion as his head feels “turned,” and he loses track of his guide, stumbling through unfamiliar streets until he collapses at a stranger’s doorstep. Welcomed with kindness and a hearty breakfast, Ready’s polite nature wins over the visitors—though the encounter quickly becomes uneasy, hinting that his journey home may be more complicated than he imagined.
