Description

A curious band of travelers sets out from Magnolia along the winding St. John’s River, intent on reaching the little‑known Ekoniah Scrub—a shifting patch of Florida’s lakes, pine‑forests and marshes that seems to reform itself each year. The narrator sketches the landscape in vivid detail: sapphire‑blue waters threading emerald borders, towering pines that stretch into infinity, and sudden bursts of color from orchids and pitcher‑plants that turn the forest floor into a living tapestry. Even the weather plays its part, with sudden rainbows and the distant rumble of thunder that hints at the untamed spirit of this southern wilderness.

Among the party are the practical county clerk, the earnest Small Boy, the artistic observer, and the ever‑resourceful Barney, each bringing a distinct voice to the expedition. Their conversations reveal a mixture of humor, frustration, and awe as they navigate unmarked paths, rely on local “Crackers” for direction, and confront the ever‑changing terrain. Listeners will feel the fresh, humid air and hear the chorus of birds as the group begins its quest into a world that feels both familiar and mysteriously new.
