Description

The story opens on a rainy Paris afternoon when the narrator rushes to meet Partonneau, a flamboyant former vice‑roy of Madagascar who has swapped colonial power for a modest student flat in the Latin Quarter. Once a celebrated civil collaborator of General Gallieni, he now spends his days nursing cards at a cafe, shrugging off medals and titles with a wry grin. Through witty dialogue we glimpse a man who sees his past exploits as distant curiosities rather than defining achievements.

Back in the capital, Partonneau confesses that the city’s allure lacks one essential ingredient: the women who once answered his every command in the islands. He soon introduces Émilienne, a shy, chestnut‑loving presence who lives quietly in his apartment, unseen by the bustling cafés he frequents. Their peculiar arrangement becomes a gentle commentary on the clash between exotic authority and ordinary Parisian life, inviting listeners to explore themes of identity, nostalgia, and the subtle comedy of a man out of his own legend.
