Description

Aboard the Lusitania bound for the Norwegian fjords, a diverse crowd of tourists gathers on the tug‑boat dock, waiting for departure. Amid the chatter, a striking woman in a white cap—Mme du Gast—settles on the aft deck with an effortless smile, reading newspapers and arranging blankets as if she were at home. While the sea tosses the ship and fellow passengers complain of cold, wind, and melancholy, her calm never wavers, hinting at a confidence that seems larger than a simple pleasure cruise.

The narrator later tracks Mme du Gast’s astonishing exploits: daring balloon ascents, record‑breaking drives, and a bold raid across the Mediterranean that astonishes the press. Her fearless adventures quickly become a rallying point for early feminists, while the surrounding society shifts toward dazzling promotions and spectacle to win public favor. Through her story we glimpse a woman who turns ordinary voyages into milestones of courage and social change.
